Ok… as the family meal becomes worse and worse at my current restaurant job, I was wondering just what the law is in this area.  I remember years ago working at Friendly’s we could order off the menu half off.  I remember hearing then that it was the law, they have to.  It was also the case at McDonalds.
My boss seems to feel that since they provide a family meal they are exempt from the “half off” clause.  But since it is frequently inedible, I would much rather just order from the menu with a discount.
Anyone here know what the actual law states?  I’ve been looking online but can’t seem to find it.
thanks,
sincerely,
starving and poor

That raises a good question. Am still investigating the whole staff meal thing, i will get back to you on that one. But what happens when you dine in on your day off? Do you get a discount? If so , then i would think that the same discount should apply when ordering food of the menu.

A waiter now, I was a manager recently, and no, there is no law that says they have to offer you 50% discount. Policy is policy, as long as it is consistent and enforced, and if you are offered 50% off when not working, you don’t necessarily get it when on shift. If a meal deduction appears on your paycheck, you must be provided a meal, but there is no guarantee of quality. I tried to argue all this when managing and look! I’m waiting tables again.
